Sport & Physical Activity Alliance

Running on treadmills - Sands Centre GymCarlisle City Council has been challenged to increase participation levels for sport and physical activity by 1% each year over the next three years 2009 - 2012.

Sport England have set these targets through the Active People’s survey by randomly speaking to 1,000 people aged 16 years and over about their participation in physical activity.

Carlisle achieved a figure of 20.8% of people who take part in physical activity three times a week for at least 30 minutes on each occasion. It was found that 52% of people did no exercise at all. These figures are based against national figures of 21% and 50.6% respectively.

To raise participation levels locally, a strategic group called a SPAA (Sport & Physical Activity Alliance) has been set up. It includes key partners who have interests in sport and physical activity. Led by Carlisle City Council a Vision Document and Delivery Plan have been developed and key aims and objectives set in order to meet local needs.

Key programmes have been developed through our Go4it Get Active programme and will include community based sports activity projects including cycling and walking. New facilities including an all weather astro turf and multi-use games areas have been built to support these projects.
