Leisure and Culture

Carlisle is a bustling, modern regional centre that is proud of its rich heritage. It's the place to be for culture, heritage, the great outdoors, sports and study - a compact city surrounded by acres of beautiful parkland.

The city is steeped in history, with a 900-year-old Castle, a Cathedral dating back to 1122 and the nearby Birdoswald Roman Fort and Visitor Centre.

Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery portrays Carlisle's fascinating and turbulent history as a Border city as well as displaying some of the country's best traditional and modern artists as well as putting on a varied programme of exhibitions.

The city boasts a range of sports and leisure facilities from golf and birdwatching to watersports and racing.

In the evening, there are nightclubs, music bars, restaurants and some of the region's top live music venues.
