Waste Services

Bulky Waste Collections

Carlisle City Council introduced a charge for the collection of Bulky Household Waste items from April 1 2009; however you may still be eligible for 4 free collections per annum depending on the items you would like us to collect.

Changes to Carlisle City Council's Greenbox Kerbside Recycling Collection Service

Carlisle City Council has appointed a new contractor to undertake its popular Greenbox kerbside recycling service. The new contractor is FOCSA UK Ltd who take over the contract from Cumbria Waste Recycling on Tuesday 1st June 2010. The Greenbox kerbside recycling service collects source segregated paper, glass and cans from 46,000 households across urban and rural Carlisle.

The new contract will deliver a significant financial saving to the authority. However, because the new contract will no longer be delivered in partnership with Eden District Council, a number of operational changes have had to be made which are as follows:

  • Firstly, around 5,000 households (c10% of the total covered by the service) will have the day their Greenbox is collected changed. All those households affected will be sent a new collection calendar detailing the changes made. Because of when the new contract will start, most of those households affected by a collection day change will receive their first collection under the new contract less than two weeks after the last collection under the old contract.
  • Secondly, because of the efficiencies that the new contractor will be making, it is probable that the time of collection (i.e. the time of day that the Greenbox will be collected) will change.
  • Thirdly, experience has shown that the first few weeks of any new contract are likely to be challenging. We will be working with the contractor to minimise any disruption. Householders experiencing difficulties with the service should call the Council's Customer Contact Centre on 10228 817200.
