Housing and Council Tax Benefit

We operate the Housing and Council Tax Benefit scheme on behalf of the government and the scheme is defined by legislation. We cannot change the rules governing how your benefit is calculated or the amount of benefit you will get.

Housing Benefit is designed to help people on low income to pay their rent. You can claim if you pay rent to a landlord or Housing Association.

Council Tax Benefit helps people on low income to pay their Council Tax bill. It does not matter if you already get a discount on your Council Tax, for example: if you live alone.

The amount of benefit you get will depend on your income, savings and other family circumstances. It also takes into account any other adults living in your home who are expected to contribute to these costs.

These pages give you more information on how we calculate how much you may receive in Benefit.
